Artificial Island in Sochi
Development, Sochi News June 24th, 2007
Investment agreement about the construction of tourist recreation complex in the Black Sea was signed by the Krasnodar Kray administration with St.-Petersburg based “M-Industry” construction company during XI Saint-Petersburg International Economic Forum couple of weeks ago.
The artificial island, named Federation Island, will have residential area, hotels, restaurants, malls, year-round yacht parking, various sea attractions – aquarium, oceanarium, and many other. Planned location is Khosta district – my home area. No dates are set yet.
Sounds good? Not to me, and for so many reasons I don’t know where to start. And, unlike developments in Adler (in the planned “Olympics” area), which will improve district’s infrastructure and people’s lives, this one will improve nothing. I want more information on this, but right now I don’t see how it possibly can be a good idea.

Hi,
More than a year has passed since this message of your waass posted.
I am aware that there are pros and cons as to the creation of a new manmade island in the black Sea, Federation Island, from a number of points of view.
In addition to this, yet another !Isles of SOCHI” (SAKURA Island and CRESCENT Lagoon) project is going on alongside the tips of the Federation Island by a joint venture of Japanese TOHO Global Associates and Marina Khomar of Rostov-on-Don.

As a Sochi resident, do you know this news? If it’s true, then how’s the construction is going on? Do you think that the two big projects will coexist
to make the Sochi Olympics successful by 2014?
I’d be happy of you kindly comment on this project.
Best regards,
TN

As far as I know the construction hasn’t yet begun, but the Federation Island project is a go.
Pretty much all locals hate this project. Khosta has always been a quiet district of Sochi. Adler and Center are overwhelmed with tourists each yeah, but Khosta, being in more mountainous location, no so much… and we like it! But this island craziness will totally kill it for us. It will kill the peace, the sea view, create “elite” regions inaccessible to “small” people, and will further limit access to the sea (which is already close to non-existent) with additional required infrastructure.
And in addition, these projects have nothing to do with the Olympics.
So, there’s the truth.
I will definitely follow the news on this projects, as they directly affect the part of the city where I grew up.

Hi,
I’m still keeping track of the artificial islands in the Black Sea off the coast of Sochi: (1) Federation Island and (2) SAKURA ISLAND (Oriental Cherry).
I want the latest news on these two islands, particularly on SAKURA ISLAND. Your reply will be much appreciated.
My questions:
(a) Since Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat went bankruptcy and retreated from the FI project, who will succeed him to keep the project going?
(b) Will M-Industry continue to work on this project or will this project itself be abandoned?
(c) Is Marina Khomar LLC preparing for the construction of SAKURA ISLAND?
(d) Who is the joint partner of Khomar as they work on the project or is Khomar looking for someone else to work with?
(e) Has the Krasnodar Region given Khomar the final approvals to start the plan?
(f) Do you think that because of the recent financial crisis the world over the artificial projects will be cancelled in the end?
With best regards,
Tak

Hello again,
Yesterday I came by an interesting videotape of Russian version (originally Japanese) which describes how the two manmade islands, Sakura Island (Oriental Cherry) and Crescent Lagoon (Young Moon) to be constructed off the coast of Sochi with a view to accommodate visitors to Sochi Olympics 2014.
http://vision.ameba.jp/watch.do?movie=1483835
I understand that there are pros and cons as to the selection of Sochi as the venue for the Olympiad and the construction of artificial islands such as Federation Island, Sakura Island, etc.; but it seems that things are on the go towards its goal.
My guessing is that this video was used at ≪Международный транспортный Форум:Транспорт России-2008≫/ ≪Международная транспортная общетранспортная выставка:Транспорт России-2008≫.
It was presented by Мостовой Леонид Аркадьевич, former deputy-governor of Krasnodar and mayor of Sochi in the presence of the then President Vladimir Putin. Some of the Russian media reported on that. According to unidentified reports, Putin was quoted as saying, “Красиво, – похвалил он. – Хороший проект,” adding that he had finally approved the project. (≪одобрил его окончательно≫) Someone was heard to yell, “Ура!”
Is Eric, who writes impeccable English on this column, still around? I’m eager to hear about reactions, positive or negative, on this “Isles of Sochi” video, particularly from the local residents of Sochi and other Russian people. Anybody will be welcome if you tell me about what you think of it with comments and advice.
Sorry I don’t understand Russian, although I read it by Google Translator. All I can manage is English and Japanese.
With warmest regards,
Tak Nonin
